Born an ace in the North Sphere, Merritt was orphaned at a young age and was funneled into the military as part of their formidable Chemical Operations Unit.  He managed to rise through the ranks and become general of the North Sphere army, but complicated circumstances led to him being captured by the East.  [Read about it in Devoted: Merritt's Story]

Merritt endured three months of torture at the hands of Troy, ultimately leading to his surrender—for reasons he claims had nothing to do with Troy.  He was made an East Sphere citizen and granted a position in the East Sphere Elite Squad, the military unit that serves the sphere's King.  He answers directly to Troy and has yet to gain Samsid's trust.  His complicated relationships with his former King and his high-ranking North Sphere ex-boyfriend haven't helped ease Samsid's mind about his loyalty to the East.
